The Philippine Statistics Authority estimated about 11.2 million overseas Filipino workers this year. Each one had a first day on the job. Yours can start now, even with no work history.
What Employers Want
Many overseas jobs ask for some experience. A UK survey of 2,000 hiring managers found that just 20% of entry-level roles go to people with none. Yet soft skills matter more than grades. Managers pick them 61% of the time, and grades 25%. Many senior leaders say new hires lack soft skills and have unrealistic workplace expectations. So, show that you listen, learn fast, and come on time.
Build Skills You Can Prove
A short course can stand in for a work history. TESDA training ends with a test. Pass it and you get a National Certificate. Some courses are free through scholarships. The TESDA Skills Passport app helps you log your skills and find jobs. Add school projects, volunteer work, and help at a family shop to your resume. Each one shows you can work abroad.
Pick a Clear Path
Some government programs give you a set route. South Korea hires Filipino factory workers through its Employment Permit System. DMW runs the sign-up page. You must first pass a Korean test. DMW also urges applicants to study at TESDA-approved schools.
Dodge the Scams
New job seekers are easy targets for fake offers. Before you chase jobs abroad, check the agency on the DMW licensed list. Then check the job on the approved job orders page. Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac suggests meeting only at the agency’s registered address. Ask for a receipt each time you pay. Household workers should never pay a placement fee.
Your first job abroad takes patience, not luck. Build your skills and pick a safe route. Then work with a licensed overseas employment agency in the Philippines. EDI-Staffbuilders International, Inc., a DMW-accredited agency, has helped many Filipinos for over 45 years.
